LED light therapy: how does it work and what does it do for your skin?

LED light therapy is one of the most scientifically backed non-invasive skin treatments. Discover how different colours of light work at a cellular level and why it's a fixed part of every Mavi skin programme.

By Joyce Sleymer

LED light therapy may not be as well known as HIFU or laser, but in the scientific world it has been a serious subject for decades. NASA originally developed the technology for wound healing in astronauts. Today, LED light therapy is one of the safest and most versatile tools in the modern skin clinic — including at Mavi Clinique in Brasschaat.

But how exactly does it work? And what does it do for your skin? We explain it step by step.

What is LED light therapy?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. During LED light therapy, your skin is exposed to specific wavelengths of light — no UV, no heat, no pain. The light penetrates the skin and activates biological processes at a cellular level. We call this photobiomodulation: light that prompts cells to repair, regenerate or calm down.

Every colour has a different wavelength and a different effect. Our device works with four light colours — red, green, blue and a mixed mode — each with its own role, from collagen building and calming to tackling blemishes.

Red light (625–660 nm): collagen and skin quality

Red light penetrates into the dermis — the middle layer of your skin. There it stimulates fibroblast activity: the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. More active fibroblasts means more structural building of your skin, fewer fine lines, and a visibly improved skin texture.

Red light also reduces inflammation, improves blood circulation in the skin, and speeds up recovery after other treatments such as HIFU or dermaplaning. That's why we so often use it as a finishing step within our Skin Programs.

Green light (500–565 nm): calm and an even complexion

Green light calms a sensitive, reactive skin. It helps settle redness and supports a more even complexion by softening the appearance of pigment. A gentle choice when the skin mainly needs rest and recovery.

Blue light (420–485 nm): blemishes and acne

Blue light targets a blemished, acne-prone skin. It helps tackle acne bacteria and calms a reactive, breakout-prone skin — without drying out or irritating. We often use it as part of a broader plan for a calmer complexion.

Mixed light: broad repair and balance

The mixed mode combines the colours for a broad, calming effect: anti-inflammatory and repairing at once. Handy when the skin benefits from several effects in one session. Our panels are 180° adjustable, so the light always reaches the area optimally.

Who is LED light therapy suitable for?

LED light therapy is suitable for almost everyone. There are no contra-indications for most skin types, and the treatment is completely painless and requires no recovery time. That makes it ideal as:

  • A standalone treatment for skin improvement and prevention
  • Aftercare following more intensive treatments (HIFU, dermaplaning)
  • Part of our monthly maintenance programme
  • A treatment for sensitive or reactive skin
  • A booster for acne-prone skin (blue light variant)

At Mavi Clinique, LED light therapy is always used as part of a broader skin programme — never as a separate, isolated treatment. This way, every LED moment is a strategic step in your long-term result.

What can you expect from a treatment?

An LED session at Mavi typically lasts 20 to 30 min. You lie down comfortably while the LED panel is placed above your skin. You feel a gentle warmth, no pain. Afterwards your skin is lightly pink — this disappears within the hour.

The results are cumulative: a single session gives you a brighter, more rested complexion. But the real improvement — better texture, fewer fine lines, firmer skin — builds up over several sessions. We typically recommend a series of 6 sessions, followed by maintenance every 4–6 weeks. Results may vary from person to person.

LED light therapy at Mavi: science in practice

At Mavi we don't use LED as a gimmick or luxury extra. We use it because the science behind it is solid, its safety is proven, and the result — in combination with our other Skin Programs — is measurable.

No promises we can't keep. But an approach that works. Want to know whether LED light therapy fits within your skin programme? Book a free skin consultation via /consult and we'll look together at what your skin needs most.
