What is HIFU and how does it work? Everything about non-invasive lifting

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a revolutionary technology for structural lifting without surgery. Discover how it works, who it's suitable for and what you can expect.

By Joyce Sleymer

HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound — an advanced technology that uses ultrasound energy to work deep within the skin without damaging the surface. At Mavi Clinique, we use HIFU as a non-invasive alternative to traditional lifting procedures.

How exactly does HIFU work?

HIFU works by focusing ultrasound waves at different depths within the skin. This energy heats precisely the targeted tissue — usually the SMAS layer (the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system) and the dermis. This heating stimulates collagen production and causes immediate contraction of the tissue.

The advantage? The surrounding skin and nerve endings are not damaged. Your treatment is precise, controllable and without downtime. This makes HIFU perfect for women who want results without interrupting their normal routine.

Who is HIFU suitable for?

HIFU works best for women with mild to moderate skin laxity — especially on the face, neck and décolleté. It's ideal if you're looking for subtle lifting without fillers or botox. HIFU is also perfect for women who want structural improvement, not just a surface glow.

Do you have significant skin laxity or more complex signs of ageing? Then we're happy to combine HIFU with other Mavi programmes, such as a collagen or skin renewal programme, for optimal results.

What to expect: the results timeline

HIFU results don't appear overnight — and that's precisely why they're so long-lasting. Right after your treatment you'll already notice a subtle improvement. But the real magic happens in the weeks that follow.

  • Day 1–7: Your skin feels firmer, more defined. There may be slight redness or swelling, but this fades quickly.
  • Week 2–4: Collagen production really gets going. The jawline becomes visibly sharper, the neck firmer.
  • Week 8–12: Full collagen remodelling. This is when you see the most striking results — lifting, better texture, improved skin density.

The results last 6–12 months. At Mavi we recommend maintenance treatments — typically 1–2 sessions per year — to preserve the structural improvement.

HIFU is no miracle cure — it's strategy

HIFU is a powerful tool, but not the answer to everything. At Mavi we don't just treat for the sake of it — we work with a long-term vision. Sometimes HIFU is the complete solution. Sometimes we combine it with LED therapy for skin quality, or with our maintenance programme to preserve results day to day.

It always comes down to one question: what does your skin need, and how do we achieve that most effectively and safely? That's where HIFU at Mavi Clinique truly proves its potential.
